Welcome

After the great success of the first RV Omnium back in November it was decided a second omnium would be run this season so that all those clubs and schools who were unable to attend in Novemeber due to COVID-19 would now be afforded the opportunity to do so.

Start time

The Omnium will run in conjunction with the years Wendouree Ballarat Regatta and racing will commence on the Saturday afternoon as soon as the lane racing has been completed for the day. At this stage the start is expected to be approximately 4-5pm and being completed by 6-7pm.

Summary Detail

  • Approximately a 7km distance from the St Patrick’s College boatshed point to the 1750m point on the Olympic Rowing Course.
  • Five legs raced in the following order: 500m (ish), 600m (ish), 1000m (ish), 700m (ish) and 1250m.
  • Timing for each five legs is combined for a total score and a winner is attained in the different classes and grades.
  • One person in each crew is the designated timekeeper
  • Head racing rules apply
  • Non-stop rowing through the course
  • Yield to the faster crew; some crews may decide to “race” between stages.
  • You can row light between the legs but DO NOT STOP
  • The starts are all running starts
  • Start and finish geo gates (buoys) will have a visual indicator that you are approaching the start line and/or you have finished that leg.
  • You should pass through these geo gate points/ buoys at full speed.
  • When you come to the end of a leg you may row light, or you can have rowers drop out while they get a drink etc, but your boat MUST NOT stop.
  • You must keep moving even if just rowing light
  • If there is a crew bearing down on you, you must move out of the way
  • Don't cut corners and miss the geo gates (buoys) - look out for the buoys and indicators.

Information for Coxswains

  • You must go through the geo gates (buoys) for the start and finish of each leg.
  • Some parts of the course will require you to go around a buoy so look out for those. There will be more information and maps on this being released soon.
  • Yield to the faster crew
  • Don't cut corners and miss the geo gates (buoys)
  • After you have completed a leg you CANNOT stop. You can rotate through the crew so that crew members can rest/drink/etc, but you cannot stop.
  • Yield to the faster crew. Some crews may decide to “race” between stages.

STRAVA timing on race day – step by step

The RV Omnium Regatta will be recorded and calculated using STRAVA

Every crew MUST nominate one crew member who is responsible for the crews timing

and list their STRAVA Name on the this page (TIMER NOMINATION FORM WILL BE UPLOADED AFTER CLOSE OF ENTRIES)

It is vital that we know all crews "Strava name" so we can determine which crew they are in for timing purposes.

When you open STRAVA there is a RECORD button (bottom centre ribbon)

  1. Ensure your STRAVA training log is public so we can see your reslut (CLICK HERE TO SEE HOW)
  2. Press the RECORD button (this can be done a few minutes before you start racing, your time 'will automatically begin when you pass the geo gate)
  3. When you get through to that screen select a sport
  4. Select ROW
  5. Press START
  6. STRAVA will do everything else
  7. After the finish line press STOP
  8. Press Finish
  9. Press SAVE ACTIVITY (at that point your data will become visible to the RV timekeepers)
